Tower Bridge is one of the newer blends in the Rattray’s range, though it’s built on old bones — a traditional English mixture with no added flavouring and no clever tricks. Blended in Germany by Kohlhase & Kopp, it’s made to honour the classic British style: Latakia in balance, Virginias steady, and Orientals with just enough spice to lift the edges.
The cut is a fine ribbon — easy to handle, lights well, and burns evenly. You’ll get that familiar musty depth from the Latakia, but it’s not heavy-handed. The Virginias carry the structure, slightly sweet and bready, while the Oriental leaf gives a dry, woody note and just a whisper of incense. There’s a trace of Black Cavendish, but more for texture than flavour — softens the edges without drawing attention to itself.
The name may nod to London, but there’s nothing metropolitan about the taste. It’s a fireside blend — steady, cool, and familiar. I’d put it somewhere between Red Rapparee and Black Mallory, though perhaps a touch more rounded. Suitable for an everyday bowl if your days are calm enough.
If you’ve been looking for a medium English mixture without the noise — something you can sit with, rather than chase — Tower Bridge does the job quietly.
