Westminster Abbey sits at the sweeter end of the Rattray’s range — an aromatic, but one that leans more towards balance than syrup. It’s made in Germany by Kohlhase & Kopp, and though the name’s grand, the blend itself is pleasantly unpretentious.
It’s a mix of Virginia and Black Cavendish, cut into a soft, manageable ribbon. The pouch note is unmistakably chocolatey, with a bit of vanilla behind it — more like a cocoa dusting than a sugar rush. Once lit, the flavour’s gentle and rounded. You’ll still taste the tobacco underneath, which is more than can be said for most aromatics these days.
The Cavendish cools things down and slows the burn, making it easygoing in a wide bowl. No bite unless you rush it. The room note’s what most folk expect from a pipe — warm, sweet, and just nostalgic enough to earn you a few approving glances from passers-by.
Compared to something like Stanwell’s Melange or Peterson’s Connoisseur’s Choice, this is more reserved. Less fruit, more cocoa. It's the sort of blend you keep around for quiet evenings or polite company — a step above the usual “starter” aromatics, but not so complex you have to take notes.
A sensible choice for someone easing into aromatics, or for the seasoned smoker after a softer bowl.
