Old Gowrie is one of the oldest blends in the Rattray’s range, dating back to Charles Rattray’s early days in Perth, around 1903. It was designed to offer a strong yet civilised smoke — something with backbone but not brute force. These days it's made in Germany by Kohlhase & Kopp, but they’ve kept to the spirit of it.
The leaf is mostly matured Virginia, with a bit of dark-fired Kentucky and a touch of Perique. No added flavouring, no casing — just decent leaf, pressed into a dense broken flake and cut into chunks. We jar it loose in the shop and it’s been a steady seller for as long as I’ve worked here.
The flavour leans woody and slightly earthy, with the Virginia bringing a mild sweetness and the Kentucky adding a dry, cigarish edge. The Perique's there, but only just — enough to give it a bit of breadth.
It needs a bit of rubbing out, but nothing fiddly. Burns slow and steady with no bite if you’ve the patience. A good mid-point between the lighter touch of Brown Clunee and the stronger punch of Hal o’ the Wynd.
It’s the sort of tobacco that gets on with the job — no nonsense, no surprises. Best enjoyed in an old briar that’s seen a bit of life.
