Marlin Flake has been around for over a century, first blended by Charles Rattray in Perth in the early 1900s. It was his answer to those wanting something deeper than a straight Virginia but without the fuss of heavy casing. These days it's blended in Germany by Kohlhase & Kopp, and to their credit, it still feels like a Rattray’s blend — quiet, dark, and well-behaved.
The leaf’s pressed into dense flakes and sold loose by weight. You’ll get mostly matured Virginia, with a touch of Black Cavendish to smooth it out, and a bit of Perique lurking in the background — just enough to keep things interesting. The tin note’s dark fruit, bit of must, and something faintly figgy.
Rub it out a little, pack it with care, and take your time. It burns cool and steady with a flavour that leans towards raisins and treacle more than grass or citrus. Not sharp, not sweet, just steady.
If you’ve smoked Old Gowrie or Brown Clunee, this is their darker, more settled cousin. A good all-day flake if your days are slow. Best with a bit of age on it, but perfectly smokeable straight from the jar.
