Black Virginia is a quietly refined tobacco — all Black Cavendish, made by steaming and pressing Virginia leaf until it darkens, softens, and takes on a mellow, rounded flavour. Originally part of Charles Rattray’s more contemplative offerings, it’s now produced in Germany with care to preserve its gentle nature.
There’s a light topping, just enough to lend a touch of sweetness, but it’s far from a sticky aromatic. Think more along the lines of honeyed toast than anything floral or spiced. The cut is soft ribbon, easy to pack and very forgiving in the bowl.
This is a mild, slow-burning blend best suited to relaxed mornings or the third bowl of the day. Doesn’t bite, doesn’t ghost, and doesn’t ask much of you. A good tobacco for reflection — or for keeping the peace with non-smokers in the room.
