Rattray’s 7 Reserve is a well-behaved loose-cut blend with a gentle room note and a civilised burn. It’s produced in Germany to Rattray’s specifications — a Scottish brand that’s been blending since 1903 when Charles Rattray opened his tobacco shop in Perth. These blends have long balanced old-world sensibility with a continental touch, and this one’s no different.
The cut is neat, ribboned and easy to pack — ideal for those who like a straightforward fill without fussing. Flavour-wise, it leans on Virginias and Black Cavendish, with a measure of Burley giving it body. There’s a light casing — perhaps a trace of fruit or honey — but nothing cloying.
It behaves well in the bowl, burns evenly, and doesn’t ghost the pipe, which makes it a sensible companion for the everyday rotation. A gentle aromatic that doesn’t shout about it.
