Black Parrot is one of those quiet blends that’s been around long enough to earn respect without shouting about it. Originally blended under the Robert McConnell banner — which dates back to London, 1848 — it’s now produced in Germany by Kohlhase & Kopp, who’ve done a fair job of keeping the character intact.
It’s a Virginia-Perique in the old-school sense — no flavouring, no bells and whistles, just well-aged Virginia leaf pressed with a touch of Perique, sliced into broken flakes, and sold loose in weight. The look is dark and mottled, and the aroma in the jar is figgy, slightly tart, with a bit of earth underneath.
Smoked slowly, the Virginias give off a warm, raisin-like sweetness with a faint edge of toast or bran. The Perique isn’t domineering — it sits in the background, lending a prune-like depth and a faint pepperiness through the nose. It burns best when rubbed out partially, and prefers a slow hand. Bite-free if treated with respect.
I’d compare it most closely to St James Flake or Escudo, though Black Parrot has a softer feel — less sharpness, more warmth. It’s one of those blends that doesn’t dazzle, but you might find yourself coming back to it more often than expected. A good choice for the dedicated VaPer smoker who wants something mellow but still characterful.
Reliable. Quiet. A blend that keeps its hat on indoors.
