This is one of those books that shouldn’t really exist… but absolutely should.
Mark Irwin has taken Tolkien’s rich and complex world and gone straight for the good stuff — pipes, tobacco, and the quiet business of sitting down and enjoying both properly. Not in a throwaway way either, this is a proper deep dive.
You’ve got hobbits and their leaf, Gandalf doing what he does best, and a surprising amount of thought put into what’s actually being smoked, how, and why it matters. It’s part reference, part ramble, and part love letter to the slower side of Middle-earth.
There’s even a section on blowing smoke rings — which tells you everything you need to know about how seriously (and not seriously) this is all taken.
If you like pipes and you like Tolkien, this isn’t optional. It’s the sort of thing you dip into with a bowl on, then realise you’re three chapters in and the pipe’s gone out. This book will pair perfectly with the Tolkien inspired Vauen "The Shire" pipes
