Peterson Pipe of the Year 2026 Sandblast For its 30th Pipe of the Year, Peterson could have designed something entirely new. Instead, somebody had the much better idea of going back 130 years and seeing what they'd already forgotten. The result is the 493 Squat “Cad” Bulldog, one of Peterson's oldest Bulldog forms, with examples of the Cad family appearing in company catalogues as far back as 1896. The 493 is the largest of these old squat Bulldogs, built around a wonderfully broad, low bowl rather than the taller proportions found on many later Peterson Bulldogs. Peterson There is a family story behind its return too. Peterson's Glen Whelan inherited an original 493 from his grandfather, who had received it from Glen's father, a former Peterson factory manager. Designer Giacomo Penzo was able to measure that surviving pipe during development of the 2026 edition. The principal change is the long tapered stem, inspired by the related 494, in place of the old 493's saddle stem. Smokingpipes It is an excellent bit of shaping. The bowl is broad and almost pot-like through the chamber, with a rounded heel, sloping Bulldog crown and those essential twin beadlines running around its waist. The diamond shank then stretches the shape horizontally before meeting the tapered stem. At around 148mm long, it isn't especially large; it simply has the proportions of a pipe that has made itself comfortable. This Sandblast is the darkest and most restrained treatment of the 2026 finishes. The black stain leaves the blasted briar grain to provide the decoration, while the beadlines remain crisply defined around the bowl. The photographs show particularly well how the blast changes across the broad sides, crown and diamond shank. A substantial sterling-silver band separates the briar from the black vulcanite stem. Peterson's P-Lip mouthpiece completes the historical connection. The company's early Bulldogs were Patent-era designs, so using the descendant of Charles Peterson's Patent Lip on the revived 493 is rather more meaningful than simply raiding the parts drawer. Smokingpipes The pipe is unfiltered, and Peterson's published dimensions for the 493 give a useful guide of roughly 148mm long, 38mm high and 44mm across the bowl, with a chamber approximately 20mm wide and 30mm deep. Exact measurements and weight will naturally vary between individual briars. Peterson Each 2026 Pipe of the Year is individually serialised, with 1,100 examples produced globally across the various finishes. Peterson has also given the presentation some attention: alongside the traditional green box comes a specially commissioned Donegal tweed drawstring pouch, woven in green and cream herringbone with coloured flecks and finished with a leather Peterson of Dublin – 2026 Pipe of the Year patch.
