Peterson Pipe of the Year 2026 Rusticated Now this is the sort of anniversary celebration I can get behind. No balloons, no speeches and nobody from accounts wandering around with a tray of warm prosecco. Just make a particularly good pipe. For the 30th edition of its Pipe of the Year, Peterson has gone rummaging through the company archives and brought back one of its oldest shapes: the 493 Squat “Cad” Bulldog. Variations of this wonderfully stout design can be traced to Peterson catalogues from as early as 1896. Peterson And it is unmistakably a Bulldog, albeit one that's been fed rather well. The bowl sits broad and low, with the familiar pair of horizontal beadlines circling its middle and a substantial diamond-section shank running back towards the stem. The proportions are muscular even by Peterson standards, giving the 493 considerably more presence than its roughly 148mm length might suggest. This Rusticated edition suits the old shape beautifully. The briar is carved into a deep, rugged texture and stained a very dark brown, with flashes of warm burgundy-red appearing through the higher points and recesses. Against that sits a broad sterling-silver mount, stamped Peterson of Dublin and hallmarked, before the pipe finishes in a black vulcanite P-Lip mouthpiece. Smokingpipes There is no filter here. This is traditional Peterson territory: briar, silver, vulcanite and the company's distinctive P-Lip. Production is limited to 1,100 individually numbered pipes worldwide, and each is supplied with its own specially made Donegal tweed drawstring pouch. The one photographed is particularly handsome: green and cream herringbone tweed flecked with colour, finished with leather ties and an embossed leather patch reading Peterson of Dublin – 2026 Pipe of the Year. Smokingpipes The choice of Donegal tweed is a lovely touch. Plenty of limited editions manage the limited bit perfectly well; Peterson has remembered to make the rest of the package feel special too. Most importantly, though, they've revived a genuine piece of Peterson history rather than simply putting 2026 on an existing shape. A design from 1896, brought back 130 years later. Rather puts our habit of calling something “old” because it's been sitting on the shop shelf since Christmas into perspective.
