Peterson Pipe of the Year 2026 Heritage Peterson has been making pipes long enough that when it wants a new one, it can simply wander into the archives and find something everybody else has forgotten about. For the 30th Peterson Pipe of the Year, the Dublin firm has resurrected the 493 Squat “Cad” Bulldog, one of its oldest and most distinctive Bulldog designs. The shape can be traced back as far as the 1896 Peterson catalogue, although examples of the Cad family continued to appear in later catalogues too. Peterson There's a rather lovely story behind its return. Peterson's Glen Whelan inherited an original example from his grandfather, who had himself received it from Glen's father, a former Peterson factory manager. That old family pipe became the physical reference used by designer Giacomo Penzo when developing the modern 493. Peterson did make one notable alteration: the new pipe borrows the tapered stem treatment of the related 494 rather than reproducing the 493's original saddle stem. Smokingpipes The result is a wonderfully squat Bulldog. The bowl is broad and low, its rounded lower half giving way to the characteristic sloping Bulldog rim and twin beadlines. From there, the diamond shank runs almost uninterrupted into that long tapered stem. At 147mm, it's not an enormous pipe, yet that broad bowl gives it tremendous presence. Peterson This Heritage version is perhaps the most traditional-looking of the lot. The briar receives Peterson's dark, rich smooth stain, with restrained reddish undertones still visible beneath the finish. It suits the 19th-century shape remarkably well. Between briar and stem sits a broad sterling-silver band, bringing Peterson's other great speciality into the equation. Interestingly, the historical Cad Bulldogs that inspired the project weren't silver mounted. Peterson deliberately added the band for the 2026 edition, both as a nod to its Dublin silversmithing and because, in Glen Whelan's view, a Bulldog simply looks right with one. Smokingpipes The black vulcanite stem finishes in Peterson's patented P-Lip. That was another deliberate historical choice: Peterson's early Bulldogs appeared among its Patent pipes, making the P-Lip particularly appropriate for this revival. The pipe is unfiltered. Peterson Production across the 2026 Pipe of the Year finishes is restricted to 1,100 individually serialised examples worldwide. Each comes with a particularly handsome Donegal tweed drawstring pouch, made in green and cream herringbone with coloured flecks, leather ties and a stitched leather patch embossed Peterson of Dublin – 2026 Pipe of the Year.
