Peterson Pipe of the Year 2026 Cobble Peterson has been making pipes since the nineteenth century, which gives it one considerable advantage when somebody says, “We ought to do something different this year.” They can go downstairs and look for something they haven't made in about eighty years. For the 30th Pipe of the Year, Peterson has revived the 493 Squat “Cad” Bulldog, an old company shape whose ancestry reaches right back to the 1896 catalogue. The Cad family consisted of low, broad Bulldogs, and Peterson has chosen the largest of them for its 2026 return. Peterson It's a cracking shape. Rather than the taller Bulldog proportions we're accustomed to today, the 493 spreads itself out horizontally: a broad, almost pot-like chamber, rounded squat bowl, twin beadlines and a diamond shank that flows into a long tapered stem. Peterson designer Giacomo Penzo developed the modern version using an original 493 belonging to Glen Whelan, who had inherited the pipe from his grandfather. Smokingpipes The Cobble finish gives this particular version a character quite distinct from the deeper carving of the regular Rusticated model. Its briar has a finer, densely worked texture, darkly stained with rich red and burgundy showing through the surface. Look closely at the photographs and there's an enormous amount going on across the bowl and shank; even the traditional Bulldog beadlines have been retained cleanly through all that texture. A broad sterling-silver mount provides a sharp break before the black vulcanite stem. The stem is tapered rather than saddle-patterned, taking inspiration from Peterson's related 494 shape, and finishes with the company's P-Lip mouthpiece. The choice of P-Lip is historically fitting too: Peterson's earliest Bulldogs belonged to the Patent era, when the Patent Lip was an integral part of the firm's identity. Smokingpipes This is an unfiltered pipe, and the example specifications give a useful idea of scale: roughly 146mm long, 43g and 45mm across the bowl, with a chamber around 20mm wide. Smokingpipes Peterson has limited the 2026 Pipe of the Year series to 1,100 individually serialised pipes worldwide. Each also receives a rather splendid custom Donegal tweed pouch, woven in green and cream herringbone with coloured flecks, leather drawstrings and an embossed Peterson of Dublin – 2026 Pipe of the Year leather patch. Peterson There's a pleasing circularity to the whole thing. An old Peterson is passed from father to son, then grandson; the grandson takes it back to Peterson; and 130 years after the shape first appeared, they're making it again. Most family hand-me-downs end up in a drawer. This one restarted a production line.
