There is something wonderfully rugged about this Nørding Freehand Special Extra No.3. The tall, angular bowl rises from the shank like a weathered cliff face, crowned by a natural plateau rim that reminds one of the untouched outer burl from which the briar was cut. It is a shape that could only come from the Danish freehand tradition.

Erik Nørding has spent more than half a century refining his distinctive style. A trained engineer before turning to pipe making full-time, he became one of the leading figures in the freehand movement that swept through Denmark during the 1960s and 70s. Rather than forcing briar into standard forms, Nørding allowed the wood to guide the design, producing pipes that feel alive with character.

This example displays striking vertical grain flowing from the base of the bowl towards the plateau crown, highlighted by a rich walnut stain. The decorative briar accent ring creates a seamless transition into the elegant acrylic stem, while the generous chamber offers the potential for long, contemplative smokes. Every angle reveals a different aspect of the grain, making this not merely a smoking instrument but a small piece of Danish pipe-making artistry.
