The Signature Smooth Natural 179 captures the spirit of Danish freehand pipe making in its purest form. Rather than concealing the briar beneath stain or heavy finishing, Erik Nørding allows the wood itself to become the centrepiece, showcasing the character that has developed over decades beneath the soil before ever reaching the workshop.
This particular example features a tall, gently tapering bowl with crisp hand-cut facets running from the base to the plateau rim. The pale natural briar reveals delicate grain patterns throughout the bowl and shank, while the rugged plateau crown serves as a reminder of the burl’s natural origins. The elegant black acrylic stem provides a striking contrast and gives the pipe a graceful, flowing profile.
Erik Nørding has spent more than half a century refining his approach to freehand design, creating pipes that celebrate individuality rather than uniformity. Each Signature pipe is shaped around the unique qualities of the briar block itself, ensuring that no two examples are ever quite alike.
Over time, the natural finish will gradually deepen in colour, creating a rich patina unique to its owner and making this pipe even more characterful with age.
