Among Erik Nording’s most recognisable creations are his natural-finished Signature pipes, where the briar is presented much as nature intended. The Signature Smooth Natural 178 is a striking example of this philosophy, displaying pale, unstained briar that allows the grain and character of the wood to take centre stage.
The bowl rises from a broad, flowing base before opening into a rugged plateau rim that retains the outer burl of the briar. Deeply carved facets around the bowl create a sculptural appearance, while the smooth natural finish highlights subtle grain patterns that will deepen and darken beautifully with years of use. The sweeping black acrylic stem provides contrast against the light briar and gives the pipe the unmistakable profile associated with Nording’s freehand work.
Since the 1960s, Erik Nording has been one of the leading figures of Danish freehand pipe making, producing designs that celebrate the individuality of each briar block. No two are identical, making every Signature pipe a genuinely unique piece.
The Signature Smooth Natural 178 is a pipe that evolves with its owner, gradually developing a rich patina that tells the story of countless enjoyable smokes.
