Peterson Halloween 2026 Rustic Briar Pipe XL90 There's something wonderfully theatrical about Peterson's Halloween pipes. Black as a moonless night, a flash of blood-red acrylic, and enough carved texture to make an old churchyard gargoyle feel positively underdressed. The Halloween 2026 Rustic XL90 is a particularly fine example, bringing a substantial Bent Billiard shape to this year's rather sinister-looking collection.

The XL90 has long been one of Peterson's familiar larger bent shapes. Its generously proportioned bowl, sweeping shank and curved mouthpiece make for a handsome, traditional pipe, and the Halloween treatment gives those familiar lines an entirely different character.

The bowl is a substantial Billiard, with comparatively straight sides, a broad base and a slightly irregular rim courtesy of the rusticated finish. It stands upright above the sweeping lower section of the pipe, creating a pleasing contrast between the vertical bowl and the curved shank.

And that rustication deserves a closer look.

Peterson has covered the briar in deep black carving, with broad horizontal gouges around the upper bowl giving way to a more irregular, almost bark-like texture across the heel and shank. Some sections catch the light with a slight sheen, while the deeper recesses remain almost completely black.

The result is a surface with real character. From one side, the bowl resembles heavily weathered timber; from the other, the carving has a more rugged, rocky appearance. The two photographs show just how much the texture changes as the pipe is turned.

Then comes the Halloween flourish: a broad scarlet-red acrylic accent, decorated with flowing black lines.

It's a striking piece of acrylic, sitting between the dark briar and the polished black stem. The red has an almost translucent quality in places, while the black marbling gives it the appearance of something rather more mysterious than a conventional pipe band.

The contrast works particularly well on the XL90. With its substantial bowl and pronounced bend, there's enough visual weight in the briar to balance that bright red accent beautifully.

The black stem follows a graceful upward curve, finishing in a fishtail mouthpiece. Its polished surface provides a smooth contrast to the deeply carved bowl, while the small red Peterson P adds another carefully judged touch of colour.

There's also a practical appeal to the Bent Billiard shape. The curve brings the mouthpiece towards the smoker, while the fuller bowl gives the XL90 a reassuringly substantial feel. It's a familiar design that has earned its place in the Peterson catalogue over many years.

Peterson's history reaches back to nineteenth-century Dublin, and the company has built much of its reputation around distinctive bent pipes. The XL90 carries that heritage rather nicely, even dressed up for the occasion in black and red.

I particularly enjoy these seasonal Petersons because they're unmistakably part of the same family, yet each shape has its own personality. The XL90 is one of the more imposing members of the Halloween 2026 collection, with its tall bowl, sweeping profile and heavily textured finish.

A splendidly sinister-looking pipe. The sort of thing you might find in Dracula's smoking room, although I suspect he'd complain about the price of tobacco just as much as the rest of us.
