Two hundred years is a respectable length of time to spend making cigars. Kampen has therefore earned itself a celebratory box.

The Dutch city became an important centre of cigar production during the nineteenth century, helped enormously by the Netherlands' access to the extraordinary tobaccos of Java and Sumatra. De Olifant remains part of that tradition, producing its cigars in the old factory in Kampen using methods and machinery that would look distinctly familiar to generations of cigar makers who came before.

For Kampen's 200th anniversary as a cigar-making city, De Olifant produced this Limited Edition box of ten Corona Panatellas, released in 2026. Rather cleverly, they haven't simply made ten identical cigars and put them in a blue box.

There are five Vintage Sumatra Corona Panatellas and five Brazil Corona Panatellas, allowing two of De Olifant's most characteristic wrappers to be compared over essentially the same format.

The Sumatra cigars use De Olifant's prized Sumatra sand-leaf wrapper. The company's Vintage Sumatra wrapper is particularly interesting, having undergone extended bale fermentation before use. It produces the woody, spicy and peppery character for which old-fashioned Dutch Sumatra cigars are so well known.

Then come the five darker cigars seen on the left of our open-box photograph. These use Brazilian Mata Fina from Bahia, a naturally sweeter wrapper that brings a noticeably different character. De Olifant describes suitable Mata Fina wrapper as particularly scarce, with only a small proportion of a harvest meeting the required standard. Chocolate, earth, sweetness and spice are characteristic of the Brazilian version.

Beneath the two wrappers is the traditional De Olifant approach: a Java Besuki binder surrounding a multinational short-filler blend drawing on tobaccos from Brazil, Indonesia and Cuba.

Each Corona Panatella measures roughly five inches with a 35 ring gauge. It is a particularly elegant little cigar – essentially Panatella length and proportions with the slightly broader diameter suggested by the Corona name – and allows around 30 to 45 minutes depending on smoking pace.

The presentation is excellent. The ten cigars sit side by side in a commemorative wooden box, five dark Brazil wrappers beside five lighter Sumatra wrappers. The exterior is finished in deep blue with gold De Olifant – Corona Panatella lettering, a numbered collection seal and a red wax-style 200 Years Sigarenstad Kampen emblem.

Open the lid and the reason for the edition is explained in Dutch and German: generations of cigar makers passing their knowledge from father to son, keeping Kampen's cigar tradition alive.

There are plenty of anniversary cigars that amount to a new band and an excuse to charge a few quid more. This one gives you two genuinely different expressions of a historic Dutch cigar side by side.
