There's something wonderfully optimistic about a tobacco tin that looks as though it's been designed for a Brazilian beach party. Particularly when you're opening it in Scarborough, where the summer weather occasionally requires a woolly jumper and a degree of determination.
Kohlhase & Kopp A Cabana Limited Edition is a German-made aromatic pipe tobacco inspired by the sunshine, colour and relaxed atmosphere of Brazil. The mixture combines Virginia, Burley and Black Cavendish. Virginia contributes its familiar natural sweetness, Burley lends a little body and nuttiness, while Black Cavendish rounds everything off with a softer, mellow character.
The real attraction here is the flavouring: lime and rum. The lime brings a lively citrus tang, while the rum adds a warmer sweetness. Together they produce a distinctly summery aromatic, with enough tobacco character underneath to keep the blend interesting.
At medium strength, A Cabana has a pleasant balance between the leaf and its flavouring. The room note is quite pronounced, as you might expect from a blend with such a tropical disposition.
The tobacco comes in a 100g limited-edition tin, finished in brilliant green with yellow edging and colourful Brazilian-inspired artwork. It's certainly one of the more cheerful tins to cross our counter.
A Cabana is a change of pace from the usual vanilla and cherry aromatics, particularly for pipe smokers who enjoy citrus flavours. As for the Brazilian sunshine, I'm afraid that's not included. You'll have to take your chances with the Yorkshire weather like the rest of us.
