Some pipes are polished and refined from rim to heel. Others seem to celebrate the briar exactly as it came from the earth. This Signature Freehand 166 falls firmly into the latter category.
Erik Nørding has always had a habit of looking at a block of briar and seeing something hidden within it. Since the 1960s he has been one of Denmark's best-known freehand pipe makers, creating shapes that follow the wood rather than forcing the wood to follow a drawing board.
The first thing that strikes the eye here is the dramatic contrast between the pale natural briar and the heavily rusticated black base. It gives the impression of bark climbing up a tree trunk or waves breaking against a cliff face. The rim has been left rugged and organic, retaining the character of the original briar block, while the flowing black acrylic stem adds a touch of elegance to an otherwise wild and untamed design.
It is not a pipe for those who prefer strict symmetry. It is a pipe for those who appreciate craftsmanship, individuality and the simple pleasure of holding something that could never be mistaken for anything else.
