There are pipes that catch the eye because they are unusual, and there are pipes that catch the eye because the briar itself has something worth saying. This Nørding belongs firmly in the second camp.
Erik Nording has spent more than half a century shaping briar in his Copenhagen workshop, becoming one of the figures most closely associated with the Danish freehand movement. While many makers chased strict symmetry, Nørding followed the grain, allowing each block of briar to determine the final shape. It is a philosophy that remains at the heart of his work today.
This Special CUT No.4 carries a wonderfully rich red-brown finish that seems to glow beneath the polish. The bowl is rounded and generous in the hand, while the grain rolls across the surface like wind-blown wood grain on an old fishing boat hauled up on Scarborough harbour. The pale spacer and engraved metal band provide a pleasing contrast without distracting from the briar itself.
A pipe with character rather than extravagance, made by a craftsman whose reputation was earned at the workbench rather than the marketing department.
