American Machine Rolled Cigars

Let’s not pretend these are hand-rolled in a cedar-lined factory in Havana by third-generation torcedores. These are American machine-made cigars—plain and simple—and they’ve got their own place on the shelf.

Made using short filler tobaccos and often wrapped in homogenised leaf (that’s tobacco pulp rolled and pressed into sheets, if you didn’t know), these cigars are built for reliability and convenience, not long contemplation. Most are pre-cut, pre-flavoured, and ready to go out of the box. You’ll find a range of strengths and flavours—everything from berry to cherry, russian cream, and straight-up natural.

Brands like Swisher, Backwoods, Phillies and Frontier have been around for yonks. They’re popular for a reason: they light easily, burn evenly (most of the time), and you can puff away without worrying about fancy humidors or ageing profiles. Some have filters, some don’t. Some come in foil packs, others in boxes. None of them cost a fortune.

In our shop, we tend to keep a few packs near the till for the regulars who want a quick smoke on the dog walk or something fuss-free for a cold afternoon by the allotment shed. They’re not luxury, but they’re consistent, available, and affordable—and in this day and age, that’s not to be sniffed at.
