Buccaneer Wilsons of Sharrow’s Buccaneer is a classic rum aromatic that’s been quietly getting on with things for years. The blend is built on Black Cavendish for softness, with Virginias adding a bit of sweetness and Burley giving it some weight, so it doesn’t all float off in a cloud of topping.
The rum comes through straight away — warm, slightly sweet, and familiar — but it’s kept under control. You’ll still taste the tobacco underneath, which makes all the difference. It lights easily from the tin, settles down without fuss, and leaves a room note that’s more “pleasantly old-fashioned” than “someone’s spilt the drinks cabinet.”
Wilsons of Sharrow have been blending tobacco in Sheffield since the 18th century, and Buccaneer feels like the sort of mixture that’s survived because people actually smoke it. Dependable, easy-going, and best enjoyed at a steady pace. Not adventurous, perhaps — but then again, not everyone needs to sail round the world to know what they like.
