Wilsons of Sharrow’s Buccaneer is a proper old-fashioned aromatic, the sort that’s been knocking about long enough to know what works. The base is a friendly mix of Black Cavendish, Virginias and Burley, giving you body, a bit of natural sweetness, and enough backbone to stop it turning cloying.
The rum topping is there from the first light — warm, slightly sweet, and mercifully not poured on with a heavy hand. It sits over the tobacco rather than drowning it, so you still get plenty of leaf flavour underneath. Smoke it steady and it burns clean, with a comfortable mouthfeel and a room note that won’t have folk opening windows in a panic.
Wilsons of Sharrow have been blending tobacco in Sheffield since the 1700s, and Buccaneer feels very much part of that tradition. Sensible, familiar, and made to be smoked rather than fussed over. A good choice if you like your aromatics straightforward, with a bit of cheer and no nonsense — much like Yorkshire, really.
