Now here's a pipe with a bit of Italian flair. The Talamona L'Artigiano 104 is a lovely little variation on the traditional Dublin, with a handsome dark briar bowl and a green stem that's rather difficult to ignore.
The bowl has a gentle flare towards the rim, a nicely rounded heel and some cracking grain running through the polished wood. The finish is a deep reddish-brown, with lighter streaks that come alive when the light catches them. It's a fine-looking piece of briar, that.
But the stem is where things get interesting. Made in a rich, translucent green, it appears almost black in places before revealing its colour along the edges. There's a subtle curve to the mouthpiece, and the shaped section where it meets the shank gives the whole pipe a particularly pleasing silhouette.
Talamona is a name with some history behind it. Cesare Talamona established a reputation for distinctive Italian pipes, and the marque later passed to fellow craftsman Paolo Croci, who continues the tradition.
The L'Artigiano 104 has plenty of character, yet remains a thoroughly traditional smoking pipe at heart. A lovely bit of briar, an elegant shape and just enough colour to make the other pipes in the rack look a touch underdressed.
