There's something rather appealing about a pipe that looks as though it's already got a few stories to tell. The Talamona L'Artigiano 107 is one of those.
This Italian Bent Dublin has a gently flared bowl, a handsome sweeping shank and a black finish that reveals all manner of interesting grain patterns. Look closely and you'll find little swirls, knots and ridges running through the briar. The surface has a lovely tactile quality, and the dark staining gives the whole affair a rather distinguished appearance.
The curved black mouthpiece is neatly finished with a narrow reddish-orange band at the junction. Just a touch of colour, mind you. Enough to catch the eye, but the briar is still very much the star of the show.
A little about Talamona
Cesare Talamona established his Italian pipe-making business during the 1970s, developing a reputation for distinctive shapes and expressive briar finishes. The marque later passed into the hands of Paolo Croci, who continued its production.
The 107 is a fine example of the Italian approach to pipe making. Traditional enough to feel familiar, with just enough individuality to make it interesting. Rather like a good regular at the bar, come to think of it.
