There's something rather cheerful about this Talamona. A handsome piece of Italian briar, beautifully polished, with a stem that looks as though somebody's stirred a spoonful of treacle into a jar of honey.
The L'Artigiano 105 is a bent billiard, although there's a little more sweep to the shank than you'd find on a conventional example. The bowl sits upright, with a generous rounded heel and a warm reddish-brown finish that shows off the grain rather nicely. A few natural marks in the briar give it character, as nature intended.
Then there's that mouthpiece. Swirls of amber, cream and black run through the curved stem, each angle revealing something different. It's an eye-catching contrast to the traditional bowl, and a fine example of the Italian fondness for giving a familiar shape a bit of personality.
A little about Talamona
The Talamona name comes from Italian pipe maker Cesare Talamona, whose distinctive briar pipes established the marque. The tradition was subsequently continued by fellow Italian craftsman Paolo Croci.
The 105 is an attractive marriage of traditional pipe making and Italian design. It has the sort of looks that might persuade a chap to spend rather longer choosing his tobacco than he originally intended.
