Smoking has been making cigarette papers since 1924, although the Spanish Miquel y Costas family's involvement in papermaking stretches back considerably further. A century of rolling papers is a respectable achievement, and they've evidently decided there's still room to improve what goes inside them.

The Smoking Active Slim Filters take a rather different approach from the ordinary cellulose acetate filters found in most hand-rolled cigarettes.

Instead, these use activated charcoal made from coconut shells, a porous material capable of adsorbing certain compounds as smoke passes through it. Activated charcoal has been used in filtration for generations, although putting it into a cigarette filter requires rather more attention to size and airflow than your average household water filter.

Each filter measures 6mm in diameter and approximately 27mm in length, making it suitable for slim hand-rolled cigarettes.

The white filter body contains the activated charcoal, while perforated ceramic end caps allow smoke to pass through the filter. The ceramic construction also helps keep the charcoal contained during use.

These filters are designed to provide an alternative smoking experience to conventional fibre filters. The charcoal may alter the character of the smoke, although it does not eliminate the health risks associated with tobacco. Each packet contains 30 filters, presented in Smoking's distinctive red and black packaging with a blue Slim identification panel.

A useful addition to the rolling kit for anyone interested in trying an activated charcoal filter rather than the usual fibrous variety.

Thirty in a packet, too. Which should be enough to establish whether they're your cup of tea before committing yourself to a drawer full of the things.
