The Romans were rather fond of making an impression. Their roads, aqueducts and amphitheatres have survived for centuries, and even now you can scarcely visit an Italian city before somebody points out a building that was already old when the Vikings were still finding their feet.
Savinelli's Roma collection takes its inspiration from that remarkable heritage, although thankfully this particular example is considerably easier to carry home than a marble column.
The Roma Rustic 601 is a handsome bent Billiard, with a generous bowl, gracefully rising shank and sweeping black stem. It's a familiar pipe shape, but Savinelli has given it a distinctive Italian character through its finishing and proportions.
The first thing that catches the eye is the rustication. The briar has been carved into a deeply textured surface, finished in a dark, almost black stain with warm burgundy tones appearing in the recesses. Under the light, those subtle reddish highlights become particularly attractive, giving the pipe more depth than a straightforward black finish.
The bowl has a pleasingly rounded lower section and rises to a broad, smooth rim. That polished rim provides a neat contrast to the rugged texture of the bowl, showing off the natural warmth of the briar beneath the darker finish.
I've always had a liking for a well-executed rusticated pipe. There's a practical advantage to the finish, as minor handling marks are less conspicuous than they might be on highly polished smooth briar. More importantly, the texture gives the pipe a character of its own. Each piece of wood responds a little differently to the carving, so even pipes of the same shape can have subtle individual variations.
The 601 shape is particularly appealing because of its bend. The bowl sits comfortably below the rising shank, while the stem continues in a gentle curve towards the mouthpiece. The result is a nicely balanced silhouette, combining a substantial bowl with an elegant overall line.
At the junction between briar and stem sits a narrow brass-coloured accent ring, a small decorative detail that brings a touch of warmth to the darker materials. The glossy black acrylic stem carries Savinelli's familiar gold-coloured shield emblem, completing the presentation.
This particular model uses a 6mm filter system, providing the option of using a compatible filter according to personal preference. It's worth checking the filter arrangement when purchasing a new pipe, as Savinelli produces different configurations across its extensive catalogue.
Savinelli's history is rooted in Milan, where Achille Savinelli established his pipe and tobacco business in 1876. Over the generations, the name became closely associated with Italian briar pipe making, developing a reputation for distinctive shapes and an impressive variety of finishes.
The Roma range reflects that Italian heritage through traditional forms and decorative details inspired by the country's history. It's a fitting connection for a manufacturer that has spent so many years refining the humble smoking pipe.
What I particularly appreciate about the Roma Rustic 601 is that the styling has been handled with restraint. The deep rustication gives it character, the polished rim introduces a little contrast, and the gold-coloured details add just enough decoration.
The shape itself remains the main attraction: a well-proportioned bent Billiard with a substantial bowl and an attractive flowing stem.
And considering the collection's Roman inspiration, it's reassuring to find something Italian that doesn't require an archaeological excavation before it can be enjoyed.
