Savinelli Miele 601

Savinelli named this series Miele – Italian for honey – and then proceeded to pursue the idea with admirable determination.

The 601 is a traditional Bent Billiard, slender and beautifully proportioned, with a tall rounded bowl flowing into a narrow cylindrical shank and gently curved mouthpiece. At 132mm long and only 41g, it is a lighter, more restrained pipe than the larger KS shapes, yet its 18mm x 38mm chamber still provides a useful tobacco capacity. Savinelli themselves describe it as a compromise between compact dimensions and a decent-sized chamber.

The smooth briar receives the Miele's characteristic warm golden-honey finish, allowing the natural grain to remain clearly visible. Paired with it is one of the most distinctive stems Savinelli currently makes: a yellow and amber marbled acrylic mouthpiece, deliberately designed to recall the colours and patterns of honey and the beehive.

But Miele isn't merely a colour scheme.

It belongs to Savinelli's Flavour line, and the chamber receives a honey-flavoured treatment using nectar extract. The idea is to lend a little sweetness during those important first bowls while the pipe begins to break in. Savinelli specifically describes it as providing a sweeter, smoother initial smoking period.

This particular 601 is configured for 6mm filters, including Savinelli's familiar 6mm balsa system.

And because somebody at Savinelli clearly refused to abandon a theme halfway through, the Miele also comes with a wooden pipe companion modelled after a honey dipper. The presentation box follows the same theme.

Behind all this sweetness sits a very sensible pipe. The 601 is one of Savinelli's established shapes, and here its relatively light 41g weight, generous 38mm chamber depth and comfortable bend make an especially attractive everyday proposition.

Some themed pipes are best admired in the cabinet.

This one ought to have tobacco in it.

Though I'd resist the temptation to put the honey dipper in the honey afterwards.
