They don’t call it “Giant” for nothing. This hefty bent billiard from Ropp is a full-handed sort of pipe — long-shanked, deep-chambered, and clearly made with slow evenings in mind. It comes from Saint-Claude, the French heartland of pipe-making, where Ropp has been shaping briar since the late 1800s using equipment that still hums with old-world rhythm.
There’s no mistaking the bowl — tall and wide with thick walls that insulate the smoke beautifully. The sandblast finish brings out a rough, tactile grain, stained in earthy red-browns that darken nicely with time. Despite its size, it sits comfortably, thanks to the generous bend and lightweight acrylic stem.
There’s no filter, just a clear draught and plenty of chamber room for long flakes or slow-burning shags. If you’ve got the patience, this one’s made for unhurried reflection — a pipe to last a whole chapter, maybe two.
