Punch is one of those old Cuban names that has survived an extraordinary amount of history. The brand was established in 1840, reportedly taking its name from the famous Punch magazine and its Mr Punch character, making it one of the oldest marques still found in the Habanos catalogue.

The Short de Punch is a considerably newer chapter, introduced in 2019. At 120mm with a 50 ring gauge, it takes the stout proportions favoured by modern cigar smokers and puts them to work with the traditional Punch character. It is entirely Cuban, handmade with long-filler tobacco grown in the Vuelta Abajo region.

Expect a substantial little smoke, with the familiar Punch mixture of earth, cedar, leather and toasted tobacco, accompanied by peppery spice and touches of sweetness as it settles down. The generous ring gauge gives it more presence than the word "Short" might suggest, while the modest length keeps the smoking time manageable. A fine meeting of old Havana pedigree and a distinctly modern format.
