Every now and then a pipe comes along that blurs the line between a simple smoking instrument and an actual sculpture. The Northern Briars Sea Urchin is exactly that sort of creation. Handmade by Ian Walker in England, each example is individually carved to resemble the shell of a sea urchin, making every pipe wonderfully distinctive.

The NB-290 is finished in a warm light tan stain that allows the natural briar to shine through, highlighting both the carved texture and the carefully inset wooden 'spines' that circle the bowl. The contrast between the crisp carving, smooth shank and flowing Cumberland acrylic stem creates a striking piece that immediately draws the eye.

Despite its artistic appearance, this remains a pipe built to be enjoyed. The generously proportioned bowl offers excellent capacity for relaxed smoking sessions, while the comfortable hand-cut stem sits naturally between the teeth. Like every Northern Briars pipe, the drilling, engineering and finishing receive the same meticulous attention as the external design.

Ian Walker has earned a reputation as one of Britain's finest contemporary pipe makers, producing handcrafted pipes from his workshop in Cheshire. His work combines traditional English pipe making with imaginative designs that stand apart from mass-produced pipes, and the Sea Urchin has become one of his most recognisable signatures.

For collectors, the Sea Urchin represents British artisan pipe making at its most inventive. For smokers, it offers something genuinely different every time it's picked up.

Pipe stand shown in photographs is for display purposes only—it sadly isn't included.
