The Northern Briars G5 Countryman Roxcut Regal NB-266 is a wonderfully individual piece of English pipe making, built around a broad, low-slung bowl with a gently bent stem.
Most striking is the contrast between Ian Walker's dark Roxcut finish and the broad smooth rim. The rustication covers the bowl and shank in a rugged, irregular texture, with reddish tones showing through the darker stain. Above it sits a substantial smooth briar rim, turned with a raised outer bead and sloping inward towards the chamber. The grain here has been left on full display, giving a splendid contrast in both colour and texture.
The Countryman shape has plenty of substance about it, yet the bend through the shank and stem keeps the profile flowing rather than cumbersome. Northern Briars is the work of English pipe maker Ian Walker, who established the marque in the 1990s and has become particularly associated with traditionally influenced pipes made individually in his workshop.
NB-266 is a characterful G5 pipe, and the photographs show the actual example offered for sale.
