Northern Briars was founded in 1958 by George Walker as one of Britain's finest pipe repair workshops. His grandson, Ian Walker, joined the family business in 1972, learning every stage of pipe making from sweeping the workshop floor to silver mounting and stem cutting. After decades spent repairing thousands of pipes, Ian began producing his own. Today, Northern Briars pipes are recognised throughout the world for their superb engineering, outstanding smoking qualities and unmistakable British craftsmanship.

The Premier grade represents some of the finest briar to leave the Stockport workshop. Only blocks displaying exceptional grain are selected, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to become the centrepiece of the finished pipe.

The Devil's Anse is a shape with a fascinating history. Made famous by the American frontier and later immortalised on screen, its rounded egg-shaped bowl and sweeping transition into a long taper stem create a remarkably comfortable pipe to hold. It feels equally natural cradled in the hand as it does between the teeth, while the generous chamber makes it particularly well suited to Virginia flakes, VaPers and traditional English mixtures.

This G4 example wears a rich chestnut finish that brings the briar beautifully to life. Flames climb the bowl while tight birdseye appears around the heel and rim, demonstrating exactly why this block earned Premier status. A broad sterling silver band provides an elegant transition into Ian Walker's hand-cut German vulcanite stem, a hallmark of Northern Briars pipes and one of the reasons they have earned such a loyal following amongst experienced smokers.

Every Northern Briars pipe is individually shaped, drilled, finished and fitted by Ian himself. There is no production line, no automated finishing process and no shortcuts. Just decades of experience, first-class materials and a craftsman who understands precisely how a fine smoking pipe should perform.
