The Northern Briars G4 Churchwarden Bent NB-282 is a rather handsome interpretation of the old Churchwarden idea, handmade in England by Ian Walker. The bowl is compact and rounded, with a slight taper towards the rim and a comfortably full heel. Its deep red-brown polish leaves plenty of the briar visible, including some attractive sweeping grain and tighter figuring around the lower bowl.

It is that extraordinary stem, though, which gives NB-282 its character. The long amber-coloured stem rises directly from the curved shank before describing a broad, gradual arc towards the mouthpiece. The pale honey colour makes a striking contrast against the darker briar and gives the whole pipe a wonderfully elongated silhouette.

Churchwardens have been around in one form or another for centuries, their defining feature being the unusually long stem rather than any particular bowl shape. Ian Walker's version retains that unmistakable character while using a substantial briar bowl and the clean finishing associated with Northern Briars.
