The Northern Briars G4 Churchwarden Banded NB-280 is an unusual piece from Ian Walker, built around a tall, almost cylindrical bowl rather than the more familiar rounded forms often paired with a Churchwarden stem. The briar has been given a deep reddish-brown rustic finish, with the smooth rim providing a neat contrast and preserving the clean outline of the bowl.
A silver-coloured band marks the transition into that wonderfully long stem. Rather than plain black, the stem has dark red figuring running through it, which becomes particularly noticeable under the light. Its long, shallow curve suits the upright proportions of the bowl remarkably well.
Northern Briars pipes are handmade in England by Ian Walker, whose work has long combined recognisable traditional shapes with occasional pieces that wander into rather more individual territory. NB-280 certainly belongs to the latter camp: tall, slender and distinctive, with plenty of visual interest from one end to the other.
