The Northern Briars G3 Bent Billiard Roxcut Regal NB-256 is a fine example of Ian Walker taking a familiar English shape and giving it a little more character. The bowl follows the traditional Bent Billiard form, with a rounded heel, gently tapering walls and a long, rising shank that gives the pipe an elegant sweep.
Ian's Roxcut finish is particularly effective here. Rather than hiding the form beneath heavy carving, the rustication follows the briar with a close, craggy texture, while the deep reddish-brown stain catches lighter shades across the raised areas. The underside photograph gives an especially good view of the varied hand-worked surface.
A polished section towards the end of the shank provides a neat transition into the dark, subtly streaked stem, whose long bend continues the line of the pipe beautifully.
Northern Briars was established by Ian Walker in the 1990s, and his pipes remain distinctly English in character, with traditional shapes often given his own finishing touches. NB-256 fits that tradition very nicely.
