Montecristo Open Master – Single Loose Cuban Cigar Montecristo's Línea Open arrived in 2009 with a slightly different brief from the rest of the famous Havana marque. Rather than simply producing another rich Montecristo for the after-dinner cabinet, the idea was to create something a little lighter for enjoying during the day – preferably outdoors, according to the advertising.
The Open Master is the Robusto of the range, measuring 124mm by a 50 ring gauge, and it holds a small but interesting place in Montecristo history. When Línea Open was introduced, the Master became the first Robusto-sized cigar to carry the Montecristo name. Like its more traditional stablemates, it's totally handmade with long filler in Cuba, using wrapper, binder and filler tobacco from the celebrated Vuelta Abajo region of Pinar del Río.
Where it differs is in strength. Montecristo is traditionally regarded as medium to full, while Línea Open was deliberately blended at a more approachable medium strength. The Master retains plenty of recognisable Montecristo character, bringing together cedar, coffee and earth with cream, nuts and gentle spice as it develops.
The 50 ring gauge gives it a generous amount of tobacco while the relatively compact 124mm length keeps things manageable. Somewhere around 40 to 50 minutes is a reasonable allowance, depending on how quickly you smoke.
This listing is for one loose Montecristo Open Master, making it rather handy if you'd like to try the cigar before considering a full box.
The Open range was promoted with golf, sailing and the great outdoors in mind. Personally, I'd start by finding somewhere comfortable to sit. We needn't turn having a cigar into an athletic event.
