Gurkha Limited Edition Dominican Toro Sampler – 6 Cigars + Cutter If there's one thing Gurkha has never suffered from, it's a shortage of ambition. The company has spent decades producing cigars with elaborate bands, exotic tobacco combinations and presentation boxes that occasionally look as though they ought to contain the Crown Jewels.

The modern Gurkha story began in 1989, when Kaizad Hansotia revived the historic name, inspired by the formidable Gurkha soldiers of Nepal. Since then, the marque has developed a considerable following for its aged tobaccos and adventurous blending.

This Limited Edition Dominican Toro Sampler brings together six different Gurkha cigars, offering an interesting journey through the brand's various styles, strengths and tobacco origins. A cigar cutter is also included.

Three of the cigars come from the celebrated Cellar Reserve collection.

The 15 Years Old uses a Criollo wrapper over aged Dominican binder and filler, producing a medium-strength smoke with cedar and earthy notes.

The 18 Years Old takes a considerably richer direction. Its Dominican Corojo wrapper surrounds Dominican binder and filler tobaccos, delivering a full-bodied character with espresso, nuts and earth.

The 21 Years Old offers another interpretation entirely, using a USA Connecticut Shade wrapper over Dominican tobaccos. Medium in strength, it brings creaminess, gentle spice and nuttiness to the selection.

Then comes the Gurkha 35th Anniversary, created to commemorate the modern marque's beginnings in 1989. An Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Indonesian binder and Nicaraguan filler give this medium-strength cigar a particularly full-flavoured character.

The Colección Especial combines a USA Connecticut Shade wrapper with an interesting dual binder of Dominican and Nicaraguan leaves, accompanied by fillers from both countries. The result is a creamy, smooth blend with a little spice. Finally, there's the Dragonfly, combining an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Sumatran binder and Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers. Expect a smooth character with cedar, espresso and nuts.

What makes this assortment particularly interesting is the opportunity to compare how different wrappers, binders and fillers influence the finished cigar. There's a considerable difference between the creamy Connecticut-wrapped blends and the richer, more robust Cellar Reserve 18.

All six are presented in the popular Toro format, and the included cutter makes the collection a thoughtful gift for an established cigar smoker or somebody beginning to explore the Gurkha range.

Six different cigars, six different personalities. Rather like a family gathering, although these are considerably less likely to argue over the TV remote.
