Mary Dunhill Mary Dunhill was born in 1906 in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire and was the youngest of Alfred Dunhills 4 Children. She joined the family's tobacconist business in 1924 aged 17, leaving in 1926 to open her own hairdressing business, Mary Dunhill Salons Ltd. In 1930 she introduced a range of perfumes, skincare and cosmetics to the US and was appointed Director of Alfred Dunhill Ltd in 1943. During her tenure, the company grew substantially, expanding internationally and she received a Royal Warrant from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and won the Queens Award to Industry three times. At a time when women were rather a rare sight in leading business positions, the impressive career of Mary Dunhill in charge of a large, industry leading international group was impressive and set an positive early example for the emancipation of women in business. Mary Dunhill passed away on 25 February 1988, aged 81.
