La Galera La Galera, a masterpiece crafted by José “Jochy” Blanco, one of the Dominican Republic’s most skilled cigar makers, has been a testament to his expertise since 1936. Nestled in Tamboril, Tabacalera Palma, this factory stands as a living embodiment of the cigar-making process. The name “La Galera” itself pays homage to the heart of any esteemed cigar house—the rolling room. Here, the harmonious convergence of craftsmanship, patience, and discipline is evident in the rhythmic tapping of tobacco and the timeless low hum of conversations that have echoed through generations.
Connecticut Range The Connecticut series showcases Blanco’s lighter hand, featuring a golden Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper draped over a Dominican Piloto Cubano binder and long fillers of Piloto and Criollo ’98. It exudes a creamy, nutty, and slightly sweet aroma on the draw, complemented by a polished undertone of oak and fresh hay. This Half Corona size maintains the flavours’ vibrancy and conciseness, making it ideal for a midday smoke or those moments when you desire a Churchill-like character without the rush.
Smoking Experience It begins with a delicate and refined flavour of soft cream and light toast on the palate, exuding a gentle and civilised yet not dull taste. As the cigar progresses, the Dominican tobaccos gradually emerge, presenting a sweet grain and a subtle hint of pepper. The final third of the cigar undergoes a remarkable transformation, intensifying with woody notes, a touch of caramelised coffee, and an unexpectedly extended finish for its relatively small size. This cigar makes an ideal companion for a leisurely stroll or a quiet moment of solitude, such as enjoying a cup of coffee on a cool morning.
Cellophane Wrapped Cigars: Each Half Corona is individually sealed within the tin to preserve its freshness. They can be stored nicely for a few weeks in a cool, dark cupboard. However, if you prefer to savour them over months, consider storing the tin in a humidor to maintain the subtlety of the Connecticut’s flavour.
Preparation The La Galera Connecticut Half Corona is a premium hand-rolled Dominican cigar that requires cutting or punching before lighting. A sharp guillotine cut just above the shoulder is ideal. Then, light the cigar slowly and draw gently.
