Kohlhase & Kopp Stormy East Pipe Tobacco – 50g Tin There's something rather satisfying about being indoors with a pipe when the weather outside is doing its level best to remove the roof.
The Germans evidently agree, because Kohlhase & Kopp's Stormy East takes its inspiration from a winter storm at sea. The tin depicts crashing waves, threatening skies and a navigation compass, although the tobacco inside is considerably more comforting than the conditions on the label.
Part of Kopp's Small Batch collection, Stormy East is a Danish-style aromatic mixture of Virginia and Black Cavendish.
The Virginia brings natural tobacco sweetness, while the Black Cavendish provides a soft, rounded foundation for the flavouring. And there's quite a bit going on here. Candied apple and cinnamon lead the way, followed by the gentler richness of milk chocolate and amaretto. It's a distinctly warming combination, reminiscent of spiced desserts and winter evenings, with the sweetness balanced by the underlying tobacco.
The strength sits comfortably in the medium range, while the aromatic flavouring is fairly pronounced. Expect a rich, sweet room note, particularly from the apple and cinnamon.
Presented in a 50g tin, Stormy East makes an interesting addition to the aromatic smoker's rotation, especially during the colder months. As for the maritime theme, I'm quite happy to admire the storm from the comfort of my armchair.
I've spent enough winters on the Yorkshire coast to know that there's nothing romantic about seawater finding its way down the back of your collar.
