Joya de Nicaragua has been making cigars in Estelí since 1968 and holds an important place in Nicaraguan cigar history, being the country's oldest established cigar factory. The Joya Red Coronet comes from the rather more approachable side of its catalogue, but it still carries plenty of Nicaraguan character.
Made entirely with Nicaraguan tobaccos and finished with a Habano wrapper, the Red was developed to give a balanced, medium-bodied smoke rather than the heavier strength for which some Joya de Nicaragua cigars became famous. Expect a mixture of earth, cedar, gentle pepper and a natural tobacco sweetness, with enough richness to keep things interesting without becoming overbearing.
The slim Coronet format makes this particularly useful when there simply isn't time for a large cigar. Its rustic appearance suits it rather well, too. This is a straightforward little Nicaraguan smoke from a factory with more than half a century behind it, and one that delivers considerable character in a modest size.
