Joya de Nicaragua has been making cigars in Estelí since 1968, making it the oldest cigar factory in Nicaragua and a firm part of the country's modern tobacco history. The Joya Black Coronet takes that Nicaraguan foundation and gives it a darker turn.
At the heart of the blend are Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos, wrapped in a dark Mexican San Andrés leaf. It is this wrapper that gives Joya Black much of its character, bringing earthy richness, cocoa, coffee and a touch of natural sweetness alongside the peppery depth associated with Nicaraguan tobacco.
The Coronet is a particularly useful size. Slim and relatively short, it gives plenty of flavour without requiring the time demanded by a large Robusto or Toro. There is a pleasingly rustic look to the wrapper, too, which suits the blend rather well. A small cigar in stature, perhaps, but certainly not a timid one.
