Charles Rattray's Briar Pipes Charles Rattray's master blenders have an impeccable worldwide reputation for their unique tobacco blends and unrivalled character. You can be forgiven for not knowing that Rattray's also produce pipes as they were only released onto the general market in 2012. Their pipes were formerly reserved for exclusive sale in their Perth shop but they have answered many prayers by releasing these stunning pipes to retailers worldwide.

We would love to tell you that Rattrays designed these specifically for their favourite Tobacconist (us before any questions it) but that wouldn't be 100% true. It was however during a visit by one of the senior members of the Rattrays group to visit the Black Swan Shoppe that a fascination with the Black Swan name and association with one of the many pubs we visited during the relaxed business meeting that inspired them to name a range Black Swan. Upon hearing this we got a little excited and managed to secure UK exclusivity of these pipes. We are also pushing for another beer inspired range to coincide with the Beer theme with a Black Sheep range (watch this space)

Anyway enough drunken ramblings and onto the pipes: Rattrays Black Swan 34 Briar Smoking Pipe: The Black Swan Range incorporates the usual high grade of briar we have now come to expect from Rattrays, which has been stained using a rich matte black stain with an impeccably smooth finish. A bold and elegant pipe that contrasts beautifully with the highly polished band, which proudly bears the Triskele embossed logo. The Rattray's 34 is be far our favourite shape and 5 years was ago was a hard shape to come by. We are glad it is getting a bit of a revival as Rattray's produce a poker in most of its ranges and other manufacturers are slowly catching on. The Poker has a straight Billiard or Pot shaped bowl with the shank exiting at a right angle part way up the bowl. The main advantage of the Poker is it stands up unaided and saves mess on your sideboard or expensive tobacco spillages while you allow the pipe to rest. The Rattrays Poker is a perfect example with striking and bold aesthetics and a good deep bore combined with thick walls for those who like a good fill over an evening.

9mm Absorbent Filter The Charles Rattray's Pipe of the year 2015's are designed for use with the any 9mm absorbent stem filters. The larger diameter allows more smoke to pass through the filter, with less restriction, which makes for a better draw compared to the 6mm filters. The highly absorbent filters have a very high surface area resulting in excellent absorption of the tar as the smoke passes through without affecting draw or flavour.

The pipes have a standard 9mm bore so can be used with any brand of 9mm filter if preferred. Alternatively the filter can be removed altogether for smokers who prefer a totally un-restricted full on smoke.
