Another sensible offering from Dr Plumb, and very much in keeping with what they’ve always done best—straightforward, functional pipes without unnecessary ceremony.
The 4598-07 is a classic straight billiard, and there’s a reason that shape has endured. It sits well in the hand, balances properly, and doesn’t ask much of you. If you’ve ever wondered why so many seasoned smokers return to a billiard after trying all sorts, this is precisely it—nothing to distract from the tobacco.
The meerschaum lining is the practical highlight here. It takes the edge off the initial break-in and keeps the smoke a touch cooler, which is no bad thing, particularly if you’re partial to a longer bowl. It also spares the briar from a bit of early wear, which, in my view, is simply sensible engineering rather than novelty.
Finished in a light stain, the briar shows a modest grain—honest, if not showy. Dr Plumb have never pretended otherwise, and I rather respect that. You’re paying for a pipe to smoke, not to admire under glass.
The metal condenser is present, as expected. Some keep it in, some remove it and forget where they’ve put it. Either approach works well enough; it’s there if you prefer a slightly drier smoke.
All told, this is the sort of pipe that earns its keep quietly. Not a collector’s piece, but very likely to become the one you reach for without thinking.
