There's something rather handsome about a Dublin when the proportions are right, and this Design Berlin Baltic Sea 032 has got them nicely judged. The bowl rises tall and fairly straight before narrowing gently towards the heel, while the half-bent mouthpiece introduces just enough curve to soften what might otherwise have been quite an upright pipe.

The briar on this particular DBP032 deserves a closer look. Its smooth polished finish is considerably lighter than one might expect from the Baltic Sea name, ranging through honey, chestnut and warmer brown tones. Long streaks of grain climb the tall bowl, particularly attractively on the reverse side, while the lighter stain leaves plenty of the wood's natural character visible.

At the shank sits the Baltic Sea series' distinctive polished Army-style metal application. It makes a strong transition between the warm briar and glossy black acrylic mouthpiece and gives the pipe a slightly more contemporary character. The stem carries Design Berlin's little gold db emblem.

The Baltic Sea collection was introduced in June 2026 as part of the current generation of Design Berlin pipes. The range uses selected briar and is produced for the brand in an experienced Italian pipe workshop, with the Army-style mount forming one of the defining features of the series.

It is also drilled for a 9mm filter, something particularly appropriate for the Design Berlin name. The company's association with 9mm filtration stretches back decades, with the format becoming an increasingly important part of its pipe production during the 1970s.

This 032 is a very pleasing interpretation of the Dublin: tall enough to have some presence, gently bent rather than dramatically curved, and finished with just enough bright metalwork to set off that unusually attractive piece of briar.
