The Baltic Sea DBP033 is the fullest bent of the three shapes in Design Berlin's Baltic Sea collection, and of the lot it is perhaps the one that makes the best use of that bright metal mount.
There is a lovely sweep to this pipe. The briar rises into a rounded, substantial bowl before the shank turns upwards through the polished Army-style mount and into a long, deeply curved black acrylic mouthpiece. It gives the DBP033 a distinctly traditional bent silhouette, albeit sharpened up considerably by Design Berlin's contemporary detailing.
The briar on the pipe pictured is particularly attractive. Rather than appearing especially dark, it has a rich warm chestnut-brown polish, with lighter honey-coloured grain visible around the heel and darker figuring across the bowl. Turn it over and the pattern changes considerably, as good briar ought to; this is a pipe where the photographs are worth studying rather than merely glancing at.
Between briar and acrylic sits the Baltic Sea's characteristic polished Army-style metal application. It is broad enough to become part of the design rather than looking like an afterthought, and its bright finish provides a handsome break between the warm timber and glossy black stem. The small gold DB emblem completes the mouthpiece.
The Baltic Sea series is a very recent addition to the Design Berlin catalogue, introduced on 24 June 2026. The pipes are made for Design Berlin in an experienced Italian pipe workshop using selected briar, while every Baltic Sea model is drilled for the familiar 9mm filter system.
Design Berlin itself has considerably more history behind it. Its roots go back to Pfeifenstudio Hartmann, founded in Berlin in 1948 by Hubert Hartmann. Lothar Schirwitz joined in 1954 and brought a greater emphasis on quality briar and Danish-influenced design, while the DB Design Berlin name arrived in 1975. That same decade also saw the 9mm filter become an increasingly important part of the firm's pipes.
The DBP033 therefore manages an interesting mixture: a classic full-bent profile, a modern polished mount and a filtering system Design Berlin has been associated with for decades. More importantly, this particular example has some very handsome briar to go with it.
