Crowned Heads Mil Días Edmundo A thousand days is a considerable length of time to spend developing a cigar. You could build a house, learn a language or, in my case, finally get around to sorting out the assortment of old pipe stems gathering dust in the back room. Crowned Heads chose to spend those thousand days perfecting a tobacco blend, and I rather admire their priorities.
Mil Días, Spanish for a thousand days, is the result of a lengthy blending project that began in 2017 and eventually reached the market in 2020. It was developed through a collaboration involving Crowned Heads, Eradio Pichardo and Luciano Meirelles, with the intention of creating something distinct from the company's existing Nicaraguan cigars.
The Mil Días Edmundo measures 5⅜ inches with a 52 ring gauge, a handsome, well-balanced format with a little more length than the shorter Topes vitola. It has an appealing traditional appearance, dressed in a warm brown wrapper with fine natural veins running along its surface.
Beneath that Ecuadorian Habano wrapper sits a Nicaraguan binder, surrounding a blend of long-filler tobaccos from Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Peru. It's an interesting selection of origins, and one that gives the Mil Días its individual character.
The flavour profile is medium to full, with a creamy foundation carrying notes of toasted nuts, cedar and coffee. Earthy tobacco flavours and pepper provide a little weight, while delicate floral notes and a touch of sweetness add further interest.
The Edmundo's 52 ring gauge provides a generous amount of filler tobacco, allowing the different components of the blend to develop throughout the cigar. It's a format that has become increasingly popular among enthusiasts who appreciate a substantial cigar in a manageable length.
Manufacture takes place at the TacaNicsa factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, where the cigars are made using traditional long-filler construction.
As for presentation, Crowned Heads has done a fine job. The main band is a handsome affair in cream and gold, with the company's crowned emblem picked out in red. A second band carries the Mil Días name, and there's a bright red ribbon around the foot.
Crowned Heads itself was established in Nashville in 2011 by Jon Huber and Mike Conder, and the company has earned a reputation for interesting blends and a willingness to explore tobacco from different growing regions.
I've always found the story behind Mil Días rather appealing. Tobacco is an agricultural product, after all, and blending it well requires experience, patience and a fair amount of experimentation. There's only so much that can be hurried along.
A thousand days in development, and now available individually from the Black Swan Shoppe. Fortunately, I can usually find one behind the counter considerably quicker than that.
