Crowned Heads Mil Días Edmundo – Full Box of 21 Cigars A thousand days is a long time to spend working on anything, particularly when there's tobacco involved. Yet that's approximately how long Crowned Heads devoted to developing its Mil Días blend, and the finished result suggests those three years were rather well spent.

The story began in 2017, when Crowned Heads set about creating a cigar that would bring together tobaccos from several growing regions. Working alongside experienced blenders Eradio Pichardo and Luciano Meirelles, the company experimented with different combinations until the Mil Días collection was finally introduced in 2020.

The name translates from Spanish as 'a thousand days', a reference to that unusually lengthy development process. I've known people take less time deciding whether to move house.

The Mil Días Edmundo is a particularly handsome member of the collection, measuring 5⅜ inches with a 52 ring gauge. It's a substantial cigar, with a traditional straight-sided shape and a warm brown wrapper that shows the natural character of the tobacco leaf.

That wrapper is Ecuadorian Habano, beneath which sits a Nicaraguan binder and a carefully selected combination of long-filler tobaccos from Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Peru.

The different origins make for an interesting blend. Nicaraguan tobacco provides much of the cigar's earthy character and spice, while the overall composition develops a rich, creamy flavour with notes of toasted nuts, cedar and coffee. A little pepper and some delicate floral qualities add further interest.

Each cigar is handmade at the TacaNicsa factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, using traditional long-filler construction.

Now, I must say something about the box, because Crowned Heads has made a particularly attractive job of it.

The 21 Edmundo cigars are housed in a polished wooden presentation box with a rich reddish-brown finish. Gold Crowned Heads lettering decorates the front, alongside the Mil Días name, Edmundo designation and cigar dimensions.

Lift the lid and you'll find a circular gold Mil Días emblem set against the varnished wood. Beneath it, the cigars are arranged in neat rows, their cream and gold bands displaying the familiar crowned emblem in red.

An elaborate red, black and gold presentation strip sits across the cigars, carrying the Crowned Heads insignia and a few words about the company's philosophy. It's an attractive finishing touch, and the sort of detail that makes a full box rather special.

Crowned Heads itself was founded in Nashville in 2011 by Jon Huber and Mike Conder. The company has since developed a reputation for imaginative blending and distinctive presentation, and Mil Días demonstrates both qualities rather nicely.

For the enthusiast who already knows and appreciates the Edmundo, a full box of 21 provides a welcome addition to the humidor. And for anyone discovering the blend for the first time, there's a good deal of tobacco history and craftsmanship to appreciate.

Twenty-one cigars, three years in development and a box handsome enough to leave on the mantelpiece.
